Where to Eat in Tulum?

Nu restaurant Tulum

Tulum is full of cool, hipster places where you can get great food, both vegan and non-vegan. I could easily stay one more week so I could try out more of their vegan restaurants. Being 5 people traveling together, where half the group is vegan and the other half are meat eaters we needed to find somewhere everyone would be happy to dine. Luckily Tulum had plenty of options… I was in doubt if I should make a whole blog post dedicated to Bonita Burger because it was that good, and I could talk about it forever. BUT let’s control ourselves and stick to the plan. Here is the list of my favorite places to eat in Tulum:

1. Bonita Burger

My favorite place we went to was called Bonita Burger, and oh my, the food there was insanely good. It was actually the favorite place for everyone in our group. They had both vegan and non-vegan options there.

Fabiola and I ordered the vegan nachos, guacamole and garlic fries. The vegan cheese on the nachos was literally giving me life! It’s one of the best nachos I’ve ever had, still dreaming about it.

It was actually a lot of customers there when we got there, but we ended up sitting until they closed because the boys ordered burgers 2 times because it was so good lol. You can see some of the items they offered on the menu above, but they had a lot more to offer. And the best part, a lot of it items could be made vegan and the prices are good!

Bonita Tulum

I got to meet the owners of the restaurant, Miquel and Vida. They must be the cutest couple ever! Bonita Burger is a new restaurant in town, so I highly recommend you go and check them out, they need all the support they can get! If you’re lucky, Vida might give you the recipe for the vegan nacho cheese ♥

2. NU Restaurant

Their website describes their vibe and talent pretty good: “NÜ’s goal is to make you discover the richness of the modern Mexican cuisine through flavourful and original recipes. NÜ is run by 7 talented Chefs lead by Cesar Castañeda, who was elected as one of Mexico’s 10 best Chefs under 30 by Gourmet Magazine.”  (NU serves vegan and non-vegan dishes.)

We got recommended to go here by several people, so we had to check it out. It’s, of course, a bit more on the pricey side since it’s a high-end restaurant. Was it worth the hype and price? In my opinion yes! Fabiola and I ordered the vegan rice casserole, and it was amazing. They also have amazing cocktails that you have to try out.

The staff was very nice and knowledgeable about all their items on the menu. A super cute place to go for a date, or bring all your friends if you want to get wasted on fancy drinks.

3. Farm to Table

So this restaurant also got recommended to us by multiple people! It’s not rocket science to understand that this is a great place to eat. One quick Google search and you will immediately see their great reviews. They have 52 reviews on Trip Advisor, where 51 of them left a 5-star review. (Farm to Table serves vegan and non-vegan dishes.)

I ordered the mango smoothie bowl and pineapple juice. It was filling and all their fruit was super fresh ♥

The place is literally cuteness overload, they have painted all these fake little houses on the wall. You immediately start smiling when you walk into their backyard. It’s a great place for breakfast/brunch. Prices are a bit higher than other places, but it’s totally worth it if you’re the mood for a really good smoothie bowl. I was in the mood…

4. HUMO

This is a new place my friend Dustin recommended to us. Humo is another Mexican contemporary restaurant, with an amazing atmosphere and staff. We went there the first night we got to Tulum, so we were very hungry… Luckily we were all pleased with our meals. They had the most amazing guacamole I’ve ever had here. I was so tired I forgot to bring my camera, so I only have these two pictures. Fabiola and I got a vegan mushroom salad, and I actually hate ordering salads when I’m out, but the chef told us to try it. And man was he right, it was so tasteful and amazing. (Humo serves vegan and non-vegan dishes.)

5. Fruto Mistico

I was not sure if I wanted to include this place or not, because the service was pretty bad and most of the food we ordered was not good at all. BUT it was literally the cutest place to eat, it was cozy, the music was perfect and a lot of the tables had like a private bungalow feeling to it. The place has great reviews, we might just have been unlucky. Fruto Mistico is a pre-hispanic, plant-based restaurant inspired by the Mayan tradition. (So yeah, they only serve vegetarian and vegan dishes)

We ordered a bunch of things on the menu, the pizza, enchiladas, guacamole, and Yakimeshi. The Yakimeshi was actually really good, I would come back just for that one dish. It’s rice and lentils sauteed with ginger and garlic, mixed with carrots, mushrooms, cranberries etc, plus topped with avocado tartar and sunflower seed cream.

But I mean, look at this place. I love places like this, where you have to sit on pillows on the floor. It kind of forces you to be more social, you don’t want to steer into your phone when you are at a place like this. I really wanted the food to be good, but as I mentioned above, it might have just been a bad day.

I hope this guide will help you chose a place to eat when you are in Tulum! And again, I really can’t recommend Bonita Burger enough, the food and service are so good. It’s not as fancy as for example NU or HUMO, but it has a charm. Anyways, all the places I mentioned are worth checking out if you are in Tulum. Let me know if you go to any of them, I would love to know what you think. Also, what’s your favorite place to eat in Tulum?

xx
